Manchester City Face a Crucial Month

Reviewing City Results in February and Previewing the March Fixtures

After the FA Cup result, winning away against Luton Town, City now head into a huge month of fixtures in March. Playing a Manchester derby and games against both title rivals will almost certainly let everyone know come the end of this run, who is favorites to win the Premier League.

February Results

5th: Brentford 1 - 3 Man City Premier League
10th: Man City 2 - 0 Everton Premier League
13th: Copenhagen 1 - 3 Man City Champions League
17th: Man City 1 - 1 Chelsea Premier League
20th: Man City 1 - 0 Brentford Premier League
24th: Bournemouth 0 - 1 Man City Premier League
27th: Luton Town 2 - 6 Man City FA Cup

Manchester City finish the month through to the next round of the FA Cup, in a great position to progress in the Champions League and picking up 13/15 points in the League. Only real fault you can call out is the rotation for the Chelsea game and the set up of the team by Pep. There were also more than enough chances created to win that game. Still, if we zoom out on the month it can be marked as a successful one.

March Fixtures Preview

Here are the dates coming in March, the toughest of which are in the Premier League and could swing our season significantly. We could be four points behind Liverpool heading into April or top of the league flying towards the finish line.

Fixture Dates

  • MAR 03: Manchester City vs Manchester United - Premier League

  • MAR 06: Manchester City vs FC Copenhagen - Champions League R16

  • MAR 10: Liverpool vs Manchester City - Premier League

  • MAR 16/17 TBD: Manchester City vs Newcastle - FA Cup

  • MAR 31: Manchester City vs Arsenal - Premier League

Thoughts

  • Given the state of Manchester United and the performance by City at Old Trafford this season, it’s a game City must win to get off to a good start. The perfect one to start the month if we come away with the win, continuing our momentum and providing the players a huge confident boost before Anfield.

  • The Champions League game, which City are 3-1 up on aggregate, is one that will be used to rotate after the derby and be ready for Anfield away. Only in a few positions as Pep Guardiola will not take it as a given.

  • Anfield away a different kettle of fish to the two previous games given our recent record there. The winner of this game firmly in the driving seat for the title. The last time City won at Anfield in the Premier League was in the 2020/21 season (1-4), before that it was in the 2002/03 season (1-2).

During Pep Guardiola’s time as Manchester City manager, the away fixture against Liverpool in the Premier League has only taken place in the second half of the season twice, City winning one and losing the other, both times Liverpool were not in the title race. On the 10th of March, it will be the 3rd time with all to play for. Both teams come into this after a midweek game, Liverpool playing away against Toulouse.

  • FA Cup quarter final game against Newcastle, a chance to get one back after knocking City out of the League Cup and head into the international break with a win. If all the favorite teams (on paper) win their ties that could leave Chelsea, Wolves and Liverpool as the remaining teams in the FA Cup.

  • Manchester City welcome Arsenal to the Etihad at the end of the month. Either way City will need the points. To stay at the top or to keep pace with Liverpool. Both teams would have had the international break before coming to the game.

There is no getting around how big this month is for the City season, defining for our league efforts. Come the end City are either in the driving seat or put right to the back. In the toughest moments of the season, that’s when Manchester City have come alive in previous years. We will know quite clearly in March if this team is up for that fight.
